The 2024-2025 season will mark the start of Avery Sims' journey as the Head Boys' Basketball Coach at Big Foot High School. "I am excited to lead this program with a supportive administration and have the ability to assist with basketball at the rec level. I believe enhancing our youth's skills will truly lay the groundwork for future success of Big Foot High School Basketball."
Avery Sims grew up in Houston, TX competing in athletics for St. Pius X High School before going on to be a dual sport athlete in college. Sims graduated with his Bachelor of Arts in Business in 2019. After graduation, he accepted an Athletic Administration Graduate Assistant position at Southwestern College, where he assisted the Athletic Director with all facets of athletic operations while earning his Masters of Business Administration in 2021.
Sims was the Head High School Girls’ Basketball Coach at Central High School (Burden, KS) for the 2023-2024 season. Sims previously served as a long-term sub and Assistant Boys’ Basketball Coach at Central High School in 2019. Sims enjoyed his coaching experience at Central High School. The Raider family and Burden community were always very welcoming and the school spirit is exceptional.
Sims gained additional coaching experience as the Winfield High School Head JV Boys' Basketball Coach from 2020-2022. Sims was able to quickly leave his imprint on the program, leading them to their first winning season in over five years. Before returning to Central High School, Sims was a collegiate coach at Southwestern College for the 2022-2023 season, holding the roles of Head Men’s Junior Varsity Basketball Coach and Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach. Sims' efforts led to a KCAC Championship-Winning season and a second-round NAIA National Tournament appearance.
Sims quickly noticed the need to develop youth basketball in South Central Kansas and made it his personal mission to play his part in growing the game by starting Primetime Express Travel Basketball Organization in 2018. As the Team Owner and Head Coach of Primetime Express, Sims has built a reputation for running an effective athletic organization, which has built the program to be recognized as a top 50 team in the state of Kansas for the last three years. Sims' involvement with youth in South Central Kansas ultimately led to him accepting a teaching position at Winfield Middle School as their JAG-K Career Specialist. Coach Sims’ leadership is evident, not only on the sidelines, but also in the classroom as he grew the middle school JAG program from 28 students to 60 within four years, while having multiple students place 1st in state-wide scholastic competitions and personally winning two state awards: Most Visible Program and Most Contact Hours.
In addition to Sims' above accomplishments, he has been a pillar in the Winfield community by volunteering, attending Central Baptist Church, and mentoring young men and women both on and off the court.
Coach Sims will also be assisting the BFWB Boys Soccer program as the JV Soccer Coach! Coach Sims can be contact via email: absims@bigfoot.k12.wi.us
